SUMMARY OF THE BOOK: “Afghanistan” is an action thriller that tells a story of honor, duty, and intrigue. Set against the backdrop of the new and the old Cold War, the story moves between London, Moscow, and Kabul; between present day and the escalating nuclear tensions of the early 1980’s. A former RAF officer working for the British Transport Ministry has discovered an anomaly with the scheduling of a number of air freight flights originating in St. Petersburg. It falls upon Warren Harrison, an intelligence director as well as a former officer with the Special Air Service, to use all the resources at his disposal to find out if the supposed threat is real. But, even as he works to head off the gravest crisis Great Britain and the West may have ever faced, he must grapple with the collapse of his personal life from the stress of tragedy compounded by the years of secrecy that are the daily stock of his career. In Moscow, Marina Tverdovsky has spent months pursuing the criminals, many who are former officers and politicians of the long dead Soviet regime, who have been supplying Soviet-era arms to the forces fighting Russia on her fringes. Her life marked with betrayal and disappointment, she has learned to channel her energies into her job as an investigator, but she longs for something more from life. As she edges closer to an unimaginable truth, Marina’s investigation intersects with that of British agent Donald Goodale. Goodale is a career soldier and spy, who carries his own personal scars from a life spent keeping England safe from her enemies. As the lives of these three rapidly converge, two must face the prospect that failure can only mean one thing- a holocaust that they have spent their lives trying to prevent, and the third must accept that the only people who can protect and save her are those whom her country has considered foes since before she was a child. Harrison and Goodale find themselves confronting a foe from the past, a shadowy Russian general who has never left the Cold War behind, and who is not a stranger to treacherous plots. For these three and many others, there is one fact that is central to them all: a place called Afghanistan. As the crisis unfolds, another veteran of the Cold War combs the hills of the nation of his forefathers, with two Canadians in tow. Since the days of the Russian invasion of Afghanistan, he has been in and out of the country of his father''s birth in, in the service of Queen and Country. He too has a history with the shadowy rogue Petrosik, and he did his part to help ensure the mountainous country did not suffer long under the Soviet yoke. But, now he must carry out a more personal task.
